Hyperlexia

Latin Analysis:
Hyper-over
Lexia-word

While many professionals have provided their own criteria by which hyperlexia is identified in children, it is commonly understood that hyperlexia is most readily identified by precocious or competent word reading ability with a delay or difference in spoken language processing.

Is My Child Hyperlexic?

While many parents may see some of these tendencies in their children, parents of children who are hyperlexia see the majority of these tendencies in their children.
  • Early fascination with letters, shapes, and numbers, sometimes even before a year of age.
  • Early identification of letter sounds
  • Obsession in print symbology (letters/numbers) moving into preschool years.
  • Spontaneous word recognition before school starts.
  • Reading simple sentences and readers before school age.
  • Delay in spoken language
  • Delay in social language (waving/pointing/smiling)
  • Reads well but struggles with reading comprehension as a child gets older.
